Off the Grid Tuesday: The Greasel

written by Rob

Well, not exactly off the grid, but for two years we’ve been running our ’84 Mercedes Diesel on used fryer oil. The car isn’t much to look at (bad paint, rust, dents) but driving for free is still fun. Old Mercedes diesels are particularly well suited to this due to the robust nature of their engine. Not much to it really. You need only filter the oil and remove the water. It goes into a seperate tank in the car that has a heater to make the oil thin enough for the engine to handle. If you’re interested in trying this, check criagslist for old Mercedes diesels ’85 or older. They tend to cost between $500 and $4000 depending on how nice of a car you want. This is what our car would look like without the dents and rust!
